Before deploying to Basilan on the weekend, the Green Berets took seminars on the roots of Muslim rebellion in the poverty-wracked south as they brought Washington's war on terrorism to one of the most remote parts of the former U.S. colony. "It's an old war," said Datu Amil Jumaani, a Muslim professor who lectured the U.S. troops. Arab missionaries brought Islam to the Philippines in ...

Posted by admin / Under Philippines Hotel
MANILA, PhilippinesStanding amid an array of foreign assault rifles and local shotguns at one of the Philippines' largest shopping malls, firearms aficionados celebrated the rise of the nation's new president. Benigno Aquino, who took office on June 30, is an avid sports shooter and clips on YouTube show him using a semi-automatic pistol with great skill at a target shooting competition. "The feeling is that he is one of us. He also inhales gunpowder," said Johnmuel Mendoza, head of PRO-Gun, the country's largest firearms-rights group, at the twice-yearly gun show in Manila's vast "Megamall." Indeed Aquino, the Supreme Court chief...

The Center for Reproductive Rights, which is based in New York and did the study that was to be released Monday, said the Philippine government was directly responsible for the crisis and accused it of violating the rights of these women by failing to address the effects of the abortion ban. South China Sea: The coming war?
Posted by admin / Under Philippines Hotel
It's a 3.5 million-square kilometer stretch of ocean, speckled with some 200 coral atolls, some submerged or so tiny they hardly deserve to be called islands. Welcome to the South China Sea, an obscure patch of global real estate that you're likely to hear more about in coming years. Six Asian countries have long had competing at times comical claims to various islands here, sending token military forces to occupy barren rocks at great expense in the name of national pride. What's new is China's muscle-flexing, which, if trends continue, could make the South China Sea one of...
